First Look: The Night Manager series 2

The long-awaited return of The Night Manager is almost upon us, with the second series promising another deep dive into the world of international crime and high-stakes espionage.

Tom Hiddleston reprises his role as Jonathan Pine, the enigmatic hotelier-turned-spy, in another narrative no doubt packed with complex characters and shadowy agendas. As the stakes rise, so – we’re sure – will the danger, weaving an intricate web of suspense.

The following is everything we know about the second series of The Night Manager – which we anticipate will be one of the best television dramas to hit our screens in 2025…

So, it’s finally here, then?

When we say that the return of this high-end spy thriller is ‘long-awaited’, we mean it: it’s been almost nine years since the first run of this five-star John le Carré adaptation was broadcast to universal acclaim on BBC One.

The core team behind The Night Manager were initially in no rush to put the follow-up together, being mindful that the best way forward was to take their time and not rush the inevitable sophomore season. However, scheduling conflicts soon became an issue with the careers of stars Tom Hiddleston, Olivia Colman and Elizabeth Debicki all going stratospheric – in part, due to their phenomenal performances in this very show.

Oh, yes. And there was the Covid-19 pandemic, of course. Still, it’s here now. Well, almost…

Who’s involved in bringing The Night Manager to our screens?

The Night Manager series 2 boasts a truly stellar behind-the-scenes team. The series is written by David Farr, who also adapted le Carré’s novel for the first season. Susanne Bier, the acclaimed director of the first season, also returns.

Executive producers include Stephen Garrett, known for his work on Spooks, with both Hugh Laurie and Tom Hiddleston on board as executive producers.

Cast: Who’s in the show this time around?

The cast of The Night Manager series 2 brings back several familiar faces while introducing plenty of new talent. Tom Hiddleston returns as Jonathan Pine, alongside Olivia Colman as Angela Burr, Alistair Petrie as Sandy Langbourne and Douglas Hodge as Rex Mayhew. Hugh Laurie is also back as arms dealer Richard Roper. So, it seems he wasn’t killed at the end of the first series…

New additions to the cast include Diego Calva (Narcos: Mexico), Camila Morrone (Daisy Jones & The Six), Indira Varma (Game of Thrones) and Hayley Squires (Adult Material), who will all join in as-yet undisclosed roles.

What happened in series 1 of The Night Manager?

The debut series introduced us to Pine, a former British soldier, working as a hotel manager in Cairo. Recruited by British intelligence, he’s tasked with infiltrating arms dealer Richard Roper’s inner circle.

As Pine uncovers Roper’s illegal activities, his mission becomes more complicated by his growing feelings for Roper’s fiancée, Jed. Pine’s dangerous mission culminates in exposing Roper’s operations, putting his life at risk and drawing him deeper into the world of espionage.

Plot: What is the second series about?

While specific plot details for The Night Manager season 2 remain tightly under wraps, the return of familiar characters suggests unresolved tensions within the inner circle of arms dealer Richard Roper.

Fans can expect a continuation of the high-stakes intrigue and complex characters that defined the first series, with Farr’s signature storytelling ensuring a gripping set of plotlines and exciting set pieces. (Which is a rather roundabout way of us having to admit that, like everyone else, we don’t yet know where this next season will be taking us.)

Where will I be able to watch it and when is it on?

While an official release date for this second series of The Night Manager has yet to be announced, fans can expect it to premiere on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK at some point in 2025. Internationally, the series will be available on Amazon Prime Video.

Given the anticipation surrounding the return of this thrilling drama, it’s likely that more details about the exact release schedule will surface soon.
